Deer Hunting

The white-tailed deer is the most sought after big game animal in the United States of America. In fact, over 10 million hunters across North America head out deer hunting each fall, looking for that big buck and hopeful about putting some venison in the freezer. Biologist recognize 30 white-tailed deer subspecies in North and Central America, and they estimate the deer population in North America to be about 20 million animals!

Even with over 20 million deer out there in the woods, at times it seems like deer are difficult to find. This is because deer habitat is an important component of whitetail deer hunting. Many hunters and landowners fail to recognize the importance of good deer habitat, and the role it plays with regards to the health and hunting of a local deer herd. Good deer habitat makes for big bucks, big does, and lots of fawns, but good habitat conditions can make for some very difficult deer hunting.

Whitetail Deer Hunting

A seasoned deer hunter knows that there is a lot that goes into producing and harvesting a mature whitetail buck. But like a old buck, there is a lot that goes into producing a smart, mature deer hunter. One of the key elements of a good deer hunter, like the bucks they hunt, is knowing the lay of the land. I use this term loosely because it means a lot more than just topography and travel corridors when it comes to whitetail deer hunting.

Knowing the lay of the land to a veteran hunter means really having whitetail deer patterned in the areas that they hunt. This means knowing where to deer hunt during the early season, during the rut, and late season too. It means reading habitat conditions and knowing the food sources to predict where deer will be moving and at what times to hunt. For those out there that have been deer hunting most of their lives you know what I am talking about. For the newer hunters reading this, make sure to pick the brains of the experienced deer hunters in your area every chance you get for some of their invaluable deer hunting tips. From place to place, deer hunting can vary quite a bit and knowing how, when, and where to be can pay off big.
