We often underestimate the importance of treestand safety while deer hunting. This is both careless and dangerous, even though most hunters will admit that they have had a “close call” while deer hunting from a treestand. There are a number of ways one can get hurt while hunting, but falling is one of the most common hunting-related accidents.

Think Treestand Safety

As the evening settles in and hunting light disappears hunters begin to pack up their equipment and prepare to get back to their vehicle or camp. In the dark the hunter reaches around the tree and starts to look for that first step with his feet… we have all been there. This is when hunters are their most vulnerable for losing their balance, slipping off the step or falling to the ground.

Providing good nutrition is the key to keeping white-tailed deer healthy on any property. Good deer nutrition comes from high quality native foods and this comes from the landscape, habitat. However, an important part of any deer management program is harvest. Deer feeders are the easiest way to attract animals for harvest. They are not legal in every state for hunting purposes, but feeders are highly effective and necessary for reducing deer populations were numbers exceed the available habitat.

An important component of an effective feeder is a properly working motor. One of my deer feeder’s motors had a spinner plate that had come loose. Some feeders have a small screw than can be tightened with an Alan (hex) wrench while some have a nut with a coupling that holds the plate to the eighth-inch motor shaft. This one had the coupling style, but as I took it apart to see what the problem was, the coupling fell to the ground—never to be found again. Question: “I spend countless hours in the field deer hunting each year. I keep an eye out for anything that can help me get an edge over wary whitetail deer. Scent control is the single biggest problem most hunters have, and many products have come out in recent years to address scent control. Recently, Deer Smoke Screen has come about. Is it another one of those gimmicks that claims not to be a gimmick that will be in the long run? Do you think this product will separate itself from the pack or just separate me from my money?”

Answer: I have always believed natural smoke scent and ash to be a great cover scent, but I have never used Deer Smoke Screen. To me it makes sense, but whether or not this product really works has yet to be determined. Yes, there are hundreds of gimmick deer hunting items available to attract the hunter to spend his or her money.
